Toyota better not stick an electric motor into a car and call it an MR2. I would rather it never come back.

Uh, if it gets good gas mileage and performs like that, I'll buy it.

Not ALL cars that have an electric motor in them are bad.

The last generation of MR2 weighed in at 2200 lbs... They obviously have the know how on how to make a light weight sporty car. It is just aggrivating to see that their latest jab at the niche ended up over 2700lbs.

Wow that thing looks like a piece of shit. They couldn't even make a steering wheel for it? They had to grab a momo wheel?

Yes the potential numbers are good but I feel like making a MR2 a hybrid would ruin its sports car 'purity'. I'm sure supra & 911 fans would feel similar if the Toyota or Porsche considered adding an electric drive-train in either car. For me, this is an idea that belongs in your hat. But in all honesty I'm making much ado about nothing, at the end of the day it'd be great if Toyota added a fun car to their lineup.

They already ruined the MR2 name with the MR-S as far as I'm concerned. I'm giving up on it. Took them too long to realize it was bad and to not tie the MR2 name with it. Now most people just remember that as first MR2 to mind.

If an electric drive could shave half a second off a Porsche's 0-60 time, while keeping the weight the same, I don't think there'd be a lot of complaints.

I would love a car that could be amazingly sports and cost me less to drive.

I guess I'm with the minority when it comes to the Spyder, I don't think its a bad looking car. I hear the engine isn't great but its certainly seems like a good sports car platform. However, it isn't my favorite topless MR2. The spider takes the cake.

They don't need to re-create the Tesla roadster.

They need to bring the MR2 back properly.

a KERS-like very mild hybrid assist to a high-spinning low-torque motor, I can accept.

An electric vehicle loaded down with lithium batteries, NO.

A 2-trunk little sports car runabout like AW11 or SW20... YES, and frankly, that is what FR-S/GT-86 should have been, with the Subaru engine, and a 2WD subaru transaxle behind the driver.

A no-trunk little convertible that you can't so much as carry a grocery bag and a passenger at the same time, like the W30 MR2 Spider, No thanks. Miata beat it before, it will beat it again.

That is why there is a red 99 Miata in my garage to this day, and not a white MR2-Spyder. little practicality is acceptable. ZERO is not, because the car would just get left at home, and no car is worth purchasing just to get left in the garage because you have to actually run an errand while you're out of the house... and an MR2 Spyder can't handle that.

It's just bad compared to the AW11 and SW20. After having driven both and raced the SW20 quite a bit, the MR-S was just such a let down. It was weezy, very girly looking, and a general step backward. It could have been great, they just completely dropped the ball because they were in the middle of their transformation to the boring beige brand so known through the 2000's.

MR2 was done when they made the horrific Spyder version, at least in my mind. The 1986 MR2 is probably one of my favorite cars for practical reasons, so if they ruin it somehow, I will be mad. Choosing a non-"prestige" brand like the MR2 was probably the best thing they could do- if they put it in the Celica then nobody would notice.

TL; DR: The electrics are coming. Embrace the instant power.

MR-S was a step backward, but it's still a great car. Tons of fun and you rarely see one. Hell i see more 2nd gen MR2's then those!

I don't care how they do it, but I think the whole point of the MR2 was to have a lightweight, economical, and tossable car without an engine in front of you. As long as they don't make it heavy with battery weight, massively bloated, or boring to drive, what's it matter how its propelled?

The MR2 Spyder isn't a bad car, and was the only affordable car with a SMG in its day. What killed it was the complete lack of storage space (the Boxster literally has at least twice as much storage space in either the front *or* back trunk), and the fact that the 1ZZ-FED was the only engine choice due to contractual obligations with Lotus in order to supply 2ZZ-FED motors for the Elise.

The paddle functionality in the MR-S was dreadful. It was sluggish and inaccurate. It also didn't sell well because it was very questionable looking and the performance was handicapped by budget short cuts.

Let's not pretend it was just misunderstood. The car was really woefully lacking in many areas compared to it's competition, almost as if it were designed by committee. It was just middle of the road.

Yes, because the SW20 cars that were 10 years older were still better platforms and more fun.

Yeah but the fact it has a 600hp 4.6L V-8 in the back really kind of helps its case don't you think?

Kinja'd!!! Singhjr96 > Montalvo

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah but electric motors output is around 290ish I believe. (to lazy to look it up again.) And that's instant power and also torque. If it was just the 4.6 it wouldn't be nearly as fast.

It would be interesting if they offered a stripped down model with just the V-8 though.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah... I really don't know what I would do at that point. How much power does the v8 make? Also, if there was an v8 engine porsche made that made pretty much close too 900 horsepower, How much would that cost compared to this?

Kinja'd!!! JasonStern911 > Casper

The MR2 Spyder's looks are fine, especially for that era, as Toyota heavily ripped off the looks of the Porsche Boxster. The MR2 Spyder didn't sell well because:

1. No roadsters sell in Civic numbers for obvious practicality reasons
2. It was crazy overpriced with a $25k MSRP - $3k more than the more practical, better handling NB Miata and $1,500 more than a Mustang GT (with 2.5x the horsepower)
3. It wasn't available with an automatic transmission, and the SMG didn't have a fully automatic mode, eliminating a huge market for "cute" car buyers
4. Storage space limited to carrying a small lunch box

While the SMG was terrible by BMW standards, I still liked it better than an automatic transmission (really making a bold statement there).

Most of the hate for the MR2 Spyder is misguided due to the AW11 and SW20 being better cars. But that doesn't mean that the MR2 Spyder is bad. If decent condition used models went for ~$4k, I wouldn't mind picking one up. But with people asking ~$8k, there are much better roadsters available.

I told you when I first commented the V-8 makes 600hp by itself. I don't know if that is N/A but if it is, some turbos would get it close to where it used to be. The cost from a production standpoint would be cheaper with less parts and a simpler drive system without the two separate motors. Knowing Porsche though, adding lightness and power means adding a lot more to the cost.

Kinja'd!!! Singhjr96 > Montalvo

Kinja'd!!!0

The reason why i'm asking how much it might output is because, lets be serious, who want to buy a 600hp car when you can get a 900 hp car. So they would have to do something to the motor. But then the problem becomes if they want to keep it around the same amount of power the motor needs to have stronger parts to handle that much power. Also they would need to add a turbo. Which would add quite a bit to the cost of the car even though it probably is cheaper or somewhere around the same like you said.
